Dear All
A number of you will remember our Dad, Hugh Wheeler, who in the early 1960’s was
headmaster at the Alexander Grammar School before moving to St John’s where he
sadly contracted encephalitis whilst on holiday in Malaysia and subsequently
passed away. I know some of you had a reunion out there last year and Lynne
Copping kindly told us about it and sent a photo of his grave at Kranji.
This year is the 50th anniversary of his death on 3rd November 1965 and my
sister (Sue Stephens (nee Wheeler)) and I have decided to visit Singapore this
October to pay respects to his memory at the Kranji cemetery and to take the
opportunity to bring our families (Sue’s husband, my wife and our four young
adult children) and show them some of the old and new Singapore, including
places which were part of our life when we lived there is the 1960’s. During
this time we shall be visiting the UWCSEA Dover Road campus, the site of St
John’s, the buildings of which have changed hugely but nevertheless form the
basis of the present College, and we will be meeting with Frazer Cairns who is
presently responsible for the campus. We could not be there for 3rd November
itself as one of our children is a maths teacher in London and could only come
during the UK half term week.
We shall be staying at the Goodwood Park Hotel from October 25th to 27th before
moving on to Penang and it would be a great pleasure to meet up with any of you
who may be in the area at the time and who knew our Dad. Perhaps if anyone is
interested you could email me and we can see what sort of response there is and
whether we might be able to arrange something!! We know that this is short
notice, so sorry about that, and we accept that it is quite likely that no one
will actually be around at the time.
We have sent this to the two what seem relevant email addresses I have been able
to uncover, and we would appreciate it if whoever runs these could circulate
this email to the appropriate people!!
Very best wishes
