Singapore Naval Base Housing. The Jacksons121 viewsSingapore Naval Base Housing - The Jacksons. 156 Gibraltar Crescent. Built at the start of the Naval Base construction in 1929 by Sir John Jackson for his European Staff. Due to the ever present shortage of suitable accommodation close to the Naval Base (some families rented in Johor) the 'Jackson' blocks became subdivided into three units and used as temporary accommodation for middle grade Civilian staff and their families before being allocated more permanent accommodation in a larger bungalow.

Allocated to civilian chargeman and similar grades along with their families on a posting to Singapore. At times. i.e. during the early days of the build of the base and post Japanese occupation when families were not present. These properties were allocated to three or four single men who were usually on an unaccompanied two year posting. During Japanese occupation some of these bungalows were used as workshops.

Our bungalow at 12th Mile120 viewsOn arriving in Singapore in 1958 before being allocated an official residence on the Naval Base we found a newly built bungalow to rent (No 12 of about 16 on the site) at 12th Mile on the Sembawang Road. The bungalow had running water but no electricity supply. Lighting, cooking and the fridge all ran on kerosene which was delivered in large metal tins every couple of weeks. Today the bungalow has been redeveloped and stands on Jalan Mata Ayer.
