Singapore Naval Base - Japanese Occupation U-Boats308 views1945. German U-boats U-181 and U-862 alongside IJN battleship 'Myoko'. The U-boats were trying to trade mercury for raw materials for Germanys high spec steel manufacture but were trapped in Singapore after the fall of Germany. The Japanese commandeered the subs and renamed them I-501 and I-502 respectively. Photo compliments of Dieter Hille Chief Engineering Officer of U-181 who was 'requested' to train the Japanese to operate his boat. Dieter and the crews were kept in huts just outside Changi Prison.
