Naval Base Housing509 views1969. One of the detached residences (No 101) on Wellington Road allocated to civilian staff posted to Singapore. These overlooked the Dockyard Swimming Pool (now called The Terror Club) and the football pitch. Different from the regular 'Black & Whites' as these had living accommodation on the ground floor and bedrooms upstairs. Note the cowboy style swing doors downstairs and the drop down cane blinds (we called them chiks) upstairs. All to aid ventilation and cooling of the property. Jun 16, 2025

St Peters Church - Youth Club246 views1961. St Peters Church Youth Club pin badge. The youth club ran many activities to keep the youngsters on the Naval Base occupied. Banyans, BBQ's and trips to see groups like the Rolling Stones in downtown Singapore. Jun 16, 2025

Our bungalow at 12th Mile254 viewsOn arriving in Singapore in 1958 before being allocated an official residence on the Naval Base we found a newly built bungalow to rent (No 12 of about 16 on the site) at 12th Mile on the Sembawang Road. The bungalow had running water but no electricity supply. Lighting, cooking and the fridge all ran on kerosene which was delivered in large metal tins every couple of weeks. Today the bungalow has been redeveloped and stands on Jalan Mata Ayer.Jun 16, 2025

Our pet monkey222 views1961. Our pet monkey 'Beppy' going for a walk from Fiji Road with Pete. He could usually be trusted to go off lead but on one occasion escaping his lead from home Beppy managed to find the nearby Tennis Courts where he proceeded to unscrew the huge floodlight bulbs. Most people on the Naval Base around 60-61 will know of 'Beppy' and his antics. Jun 16, 2025

Our pet monkey214 views1961 - Many animals mainly cats and dogs were passed on between families coming and going from the Naval Base. In our case we took over the only monkey on the base. Beppy a blue rhesus macaque who turned out to be a very loyal pet and 'guard dog' for the property. Beppy was a great friend of the passing ice cream van. The driver ran an account with Beppy to supply an ice lolly on passing and ran up a large account that we settled every month.Jun 16, 2025
