Singapore Naval Base Housing - Wellington Road 199831 viewsView of housing on Wellington Road. Picture taken from the same spot as the photo taken in 1929 showing the houses under construction. In 1998 these houses were leased to the US Navy for their staff and families. It was interesting to learn that 'folklore' amongst the USN families was that these houses were built by the Japanese during occupation for their officers using forced British labour. The logic - each house had a 'Geisha' room at the rear. I guess it did look like a Geisha room but it was actually there for the Amah!

Royal Naval Base School. Bussing to school196852 viewsRN School 1968. Pupil being picked up from his home in the Naval Base to be taken to the RN School. A fleet of Naval coaches (probably 9 or 10) picked up the children from all over Singapore to bring them to the RN School in the Naval Base at Sembawang. Several Naval coaches also picked up the older students and transported them to the Alexandra Grammar and St John's Secondary Modern Schools in down town Singapore.

Singapore Naval Base - Fishing in the Dockyard (2)123 views1963. Peter Banks after a nights fishing off a floating dock in the Naval Dockyard. A good catch of Ikan Tenggiri. (Malay name). A shoal of these fish were found to be circling a couple of metres down under the overhanging floodlights at the end of the dock. A difficult fish to eat due to the mass of small bones in the flesh but our amah pound the whole fish into a paste and made them into tasty fish balls. Mar 27, 2025

Singapore Naval Base - Fishing in the Dockyard125 views1964. Colin Banks holding up an Ikan Cermin (Malay name) caught whist fishing from a floating dock in the Naval Dockyard. A little bit of trick photography has been used for fun but it was a nice big fish. Because they are a flat and thin fish they are able to put up a tremendous fight when caught.Mar 27, 2025

The Japanese commandeered the subs and renamed them I-501 and I-502 respectively. Photo compliments of Dieter Hille Chief Engineering Officer of U-181 who was 'requested' to train the Japanese to operate his boat. Dieter and the crews were kept in huts just outside Changi Prison.
