"The Cola Bar"

Thanks to Kenny Symmons for this photo.

My thanks to Peter Chan for the following four photos

This photo was taken around 1963 in Chun Tin Road, Bukit Timah.  The Halfway House Nightclub and Restaurant is nearby.  I also remember travelling on the Green Bus into Singapore City and back quite often.

TV Tower on top of Butik Batok Hill.  This was a transmission station for TV broadcast throughout Singapore from 1963.  Butik Batok is next to the old Ford Motor Company.  The TV Tower was recently closed down this year (2006) by its owners.

Thanks to Johnny Ho for the following two photos of the shops on the Serangoon Garden Estate, sent to him by his friend Derek Lehrle and taken in the early 60s.  Also for photos of the Opera Estate and Singapore Grand Prix.

Serangoon Garden Shops

Behind these modern terrace shop houses about 1 km away were the old wood and zinc kampong house (villages).  I used to go fishing with Bobby (Robert Holroyd) in one of  the commercial fishing ponds (still remember its called Redmire) that dotted the farmland of Serangoon Gardens.

Opera Estate

Opera Estate is now a very well developed private residential area.
The streets there are all named after famous operas e.g. Figaro Street...
Where once stood wood and zinc houses, pigs and chickens, you now find
expensive design 3-storey bungalows and terrace houses.
Siglap and Opera Estate are places where the well-heeled congregate.

Woo Mon Chew Road is the entrance to the Opera Estate.

Thanks to Maureen Upfield for the following two photos

Thanks to John Hake for these nine photos of the Singapore Grand Prix.  John says that he thinks the year was either 1964 or 1965 and that they were taken from what looks to be Nee Soon hairpin.  John was in the Royal Navy based at HMS Terror.

My thanks to Peter Chan for the following pictures

On the new 2005 photo is a dual carriage road whereas in the 1960s it was a single carriage road.  I have used the red arrows to indicate the boundaries of the old race track as compared to today.  The only difference between John and my photos: I took it straight out of the pits looking towards the Thomson Mile whereas John stood on the Thomson Mile looking into Old Thomson Road.  Please note we are both in the Nee Soon Range Hairpin location except from different angles.
